Frequently asked questions

How do I uninstall Norchit?

  1. Quit Norchit (click its menubar icon → Quit Norchit, or press ⌘Q while focused).
  2. Open Finder → Applications, find Norchit, drag it to the Trash.
  3. (Optional) Remove stored preferences by opening Terminal and running:
    defaults delete com.unbundio.norchit
  4. (Optional) If you enabled Launch at Login, macOS may keep a login-item entry until you empty the Trash; you can also review System Settings → General → Login Items and remove Norchit explicitly.

Why doesn't the HUD appear on my desktop Mac (iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, Mac Pro)?

Norchit's HUD is designed to dock one point below the MacBook's hardware notch. Desktop Macs have no notch, so the notch-aligned HUD is not shown. The app still runs and is accessible via its menubar icon; you can open Preferences and metric detail panels from there. A wider desktop-oriented surface is on the roadmap.

The Public IP field in the Network detail panel shows "unavailable" or fails to load.

The Public IP feature calls api.ipify.org over HTTPS. It can fail if:

Everything else in Norchit (CPU, RAM, local IPs, disk, battery) works fully offline and is unaffected.

How does Norchit detect that I'm on a VPN?

Norchit inspects local network interface names and flags. VPN clients on macOS typically present tunnel interfaces (utun*, ipsec*, ppp*, or similar). When such an interface is active and carrying traffic, the Network detail panel marks the corresponding address as a VPN tunnel. Norchit does not inspect packet contents, query the VPN provider, or transmit anything about the VPN configuration.

How does the refresh rate affect battery life?

Preferences let you pick 1s, 2s (default), or 5s sampling.

Norchit already pauses sampling when the display sleeps and can be hidden automatically during fullscreen video or presentations (see Preferences → Display).

Norchit is showing "—" or a warning icon on a segment.

That means the metric is not currently available. Most common causes:

Reporting a bug

Email bug reports to master@divechain.app. A good bug report includes:

  1. Norchit version (menubar icon → About).
  2. macOS version (Apple menu → About This Mac).
  3. Mac model (particularly whether it has a notch).
  4. Steps to reproduce.
  5. What you expected vs. what happened.
  6. Screenshot or screen recording if the bug is visual.
  7. Console logs, if applicable — open Console.app, filter by Norchit, and copy relevant lines. Please redact anything you do not want shared.

If the bug involves a crash, the macOS CrashReporter logs in ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ (files starting with Norchit-) are extremely helpful. Attach the .ips file to the email.
